Andrius Mačerauska – a trained technician from Lithuania – has lived and worked in the Netherlands since 2016. When he first came here, he worked for a different employment agency. After a year or so, a colleague recommended InAxtion and he made the switch.
Since then, he hasn’t looked back, passing through the ranks from electrician to senior technician. In fact, Andrius is very much in demand, so much so that companies often ask for him by name! We spoke to Andrius to hear more about his life and work through InAxtion.
How has your career in the Netherlands progressed?
In Lithuania, I did similar work: I was an electrician. After moving to the Netherlands, I did a few projects as an electrician for InAxtion, before I moved up to the position of technician. I’m still not where I’d like to be, but I think it’s good.
I started as an electrician on one project, then after a couple of weeks my consultant, Kim, said they were looking for a technician. And I was waiting for that position! So I started there, working as a junior technician. Being a junior means that you’re helping somebody who is a senior, so by showing my skills and experience, I was able to reach the position of senior technician position. One project led to another, and here I am!
I’ve been working at Botlek Terminal for six years now. During that time, I’ve had the chance to work on different projects. I came here to earn good money, but I like what I do – that’s just as important. I’m growing my experience and my salary together!
Can you describe a typical working day?
I work on industrial projects – like factories – and my role is varied. Right now, I’m based at Botlek. My time is split between different activities like maintenance, call-outs, and ATEX inspections.
As part of an ATEX inspection, I have to make sure the wires are correctly connected according to the rules. Usually what happens is I get the drawings and check that everything’s connected properly, including the cables and instruments.
What made you choose the Netherlands?
After Lithuania joined the Euro in 2015, prices went up. I felt like I needed to make more money. So I came to the Netherlands to earn more; I was never planning to stay! The money I was able to earn here, created more possibilities for my family back home.
To start with, I missed my family, but I would work for two months then spend two weeks at home. My daughter was very young at the time, and it was hard to be away from her. It doesn’t matter how much contact you have online – through WhatsApp or Messenger — it’s not the same as being there.
How has InAxtion helped you?
The consultants at InAxtion are genuinely there to help you – especially if there’s a problem. I always get paid, and I never have trouble! When I’ve needed a car, they’ve helped with that. They’re a big help.
Also, most of my projects have been six months or more, which means there’s been no need to move to new accommodation in a new location. One summer, my consultant also helped find accommodation for my family, so they could stay in the Netherlands and I could see them. They were happy and I was happy!
Then the pandemic hit. Everything closed, so they stayed here in the Netherlands – and they’re still here. We’re now buying a house here! InAxtion has helped us with understanding the rules and the paperwork, and my children are now in a Dutch school. Their Dutch is way better than mine!
I’d definitely recommend InAxtion as an employment agency for good people who want to work hard and progress their careers.
