The perfect fit – Oppertunities for pipefitters in the netherlands

Pipe fitting is an old trade, but there’s still strong demand for skilled pipefitters in the Netherlands. That’s partly due to the number of oil and gas refineries in the country – including five refineries in the port of Rotterdam.

For skilled pipefitters with the right mindset, the Netherlands has plenty of work – and plenty of chances for progression. It’s also a great place to live! Here at InAxtion, our consultants help many EU workers take up pipe fitting roles in the Netherlands. Interested? Here’s what you need to know.

Why the Netherlands needs pipefitters

Pipes are needed for transporting liquids and gases, on land or at sea. With several large oil and gas refineries, the Netherlands has an ongoing need for pipefitters in the petrochemical industry. In fact, all the big petrochemical companies are here. Most of the refineries can be found at Botlek and Vondelingen area, and there’s also a smaller number in Zeeland. The industry also needs pipefitters onboard vessels.

But the Netherlands has a shortage of trained pipefitters. There aren’t enough young people entering the trade, so the petrochemical companies look to other EU countries to fill open roles in their workforce. That’s where InAxtion comes in, connecting EU citizens with suitable roles in the Netherlands.

Essential skills and qualifications for pipefitters

There are two types of pipefitter: those fitting pipes in a workshop environment, and those working out in the field, installing pipework. A good pipefitter must be able to make a plan and fabricate it with pipe. This takes two key skills: reading a drawing, and making a drawing. Before a pipefitter can start work in the Netherlands, they need to do a test – bending a wire or pipe to the shape set out in the plan.

Safety qualifications also apply. That means pipefitters need the VCA safety certificate – Veiligheid Checklist Aannemers. Petrochemical companies also have their own safety rules and training, which workers either complete online or on-site. The great thing about working through InAxtion in the Netherlands is that our consultants can help you with the training materials needed to obtain the right certifications to work.

Opportunities for pipefitters through InAxtion

In the Netherlands, pipefitters only tend to be out of work when they choose to be. Companies tend to hold on to good pipefitters.

They’re difficult to find and highly-prized. In fact, some flange mechanics – people experienced in working with pipes and steel – decide to make the move into pipe fitting. Some pipefitters also take up opportunities to move into foreman or supervisor positions.

Here at InAxtion, we like to look after our workers, making sure they feel at home. We provide support with finding temporary accommodation, and arranging transport to and from work sites. Health and safety is a priority. We work hard to ensure the best on-site conditions.
